About the Opportunity

A private, not-for-profit, 950-bed, 8-hospital regional health system, one of the largest in North Carolina and serving more than 1 million inpatients and outpatients annually, is seeking a NICU Clinical Pharmacist.

This role is responsible for demonstrating clinical and operational knowledge and expertise as it relates to assessment, treatment, and care of patients. The clinical pharmacist will implement and maintain clinical rounding services, complete medication orders and target medication dosing consults for designated teams, assist with orienting and training new employees, and provide opportunities for the development, evaluation, and advancement of residents and students by serving as a preceptor.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive patient medication order evaluation, checking for problems with dosages, interactions, and incompatibilities
• Prepare and dispense medication orders per physician request according to established policies, procedures, and protocols
• Review and interpret culture and susceptibility data for antibiotic appropriateness and recommend changes as necessary
• Assist with pharmacokinetics consult services and drug dosing per organizational protocols
• Detect and report suspected adverse drug reactions and medication errors accurately and in a timely manner
• Document all clinical activities and interventions accurately and completely
• Create a sustainable rounding schedule to provide clinical pharmacy services to patients as part of the medical team
• Develop working relationships with pharmacists, attending physicians, medical residents, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and other healthcare team members
• Function as a supervisor of residents, students, and co-workers, and maintain ASHP professional development requirements as a qualified preceptor
• Precept, evaluate, and mentor pharmacy learners including PGY1/PGY2 pharmacy residents and PharmD students
• Develop and implement quality improvement measures to improve patient care and staff efficiency

Qualifications

Education and Licensure

• Doctor of Pharmacy degree required
• Licensed pharmacist by the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy, or eligible for licensure, required
• Board Certification preferred

Experience

• 1 year of post-graduate training (i.e. ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency) or equivalent clinical experience required
• PGY2 in an acute care setting or equivalent practice experience, or PGY1 residency plus 3 years of clinical experience, preferred

• Good communication skills, both oral and written
• Interpersonal skills that promote cooperative peer behavior
• Knowledge of drugs and how they act and interact
• Knowledge of state and national pharmacy laws
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Ability to organize and prioritize work assignments and ensure pharmacy services are provided in a timely manner
• Punctual and dependable, including fulfillment of on-call obligations per prearranged schedule
